Basic Installation Steps for Metal Carports 0
Carports are a highly practical addition to a home or property. They protect your vehicles from rain, sun, and snow, but today’s metal carports also stand up to high winds when properly anchored. With an endless variety of sheet metal colors available to choose from, a carport can complement a home, adding value and function.
Carport companies today have advanced the construction of metal carports to the point where it is a simple job to install it. Steel tubing, top and bottom rails fit into the roof structure, and adjustments are made with metal fasteners for a perfect fit. Metal lean to carport kits tend to be a little more difficult to install because you have to create a tight seal between the carport and the side of your home. Make sure you follow all of the manufacturer’s recommendations for a lean to installation because a missed step could lead to a leaky seam which can be quite inconvenient.
For a homeowner and a couple of laborers, it’s possible to set up a simple carport structure in a weekend but only if the simple installation steps are followed carefully. Carports in general are not complicated structures, and can usually be erected on your property without a permit but you should definitely find this out before you begin the installation process.
Although the carport itself may be a simple structure, preparing a foundation involves more work when concrete needs to be laid. If the structure is being anchored to concrete, most metal carports can be secured with concrete expansion anchors. These are simple to insert once a hole is drilled. For a carport being anchored to gravel or grass, it is recommended the installer use longer anchors and pour concrete anchor posts on the corners.
Another anchoring option is to use the Manta Ray ground anchor, which is a ground clamp connected to a zinc-coated anchor over three feet long. This anchoring bolt will remain about six to eight inches above ground, where the base rail of the carport can be attached.
Purchase a carport with the best gauge steel tubing for your structure, especially if you anticipate a lot of heavy snow. Be sure there is a solid warranty in place as well, and have the site prepped and ready for the delivery of your carport kit.
