Boxes for Jewelry: Past and Present 0
What’s funny about boxes for jewelry is that they can be worth as much as, or or more than the jewelry that they hold inside! a jewelry box, or sometimes referred to as a casket, are used to hold jewlry or little trinkets that one might want to keep in a safe place. They were originally used, they became common for nobles in the middle ages, to keep potential thieves from pocketing jewelry.
They would often have locks on them and although they were small enough to cary, a disgruntled guest couldnt just put them in their pocket and walk away. Today though, they are often used to protect our jewlry from us! By this I mean from our habit to loose things.
Jewelry boxes found from hundreds of years ago have a cost, craftsmanship, and beauty that seems limitless. Some caskets would be made from ivory with vines and leaves engraved in it, and the locks and metal pieces made of silver or gold engraved with flowers and other beautiful designs. These boxes were commonly known to be collective pieces to add beauty to a room although this was not their original function.
Today jewelry boxes are commonly made from wood and have traded in the engravings for a more smooth, polished, modern look. Many of these modern caskets still do have a lock and key, but it is much smaller and less obvious than the models from the Renaissance ages.
A change within these jewelry boxes within the last few hundred years is their ability to play music, starting from around the 17th century and continued today. There are many jewelry boxes that don\’t have locks though, and may try to keep it as simple as possible. One common design today is a solid color box with a solid color picture on the top or side that contrasts in color.
