Disney Trading Pins: Trading on Disney Property 0
Disney trading pins are collected by both the young and old and usually worn on neck and hip lanyards, with each lanyard capable of holding up to a dozen pins. The collectible pins were introduced to encourage more interaction with Disney resort cast members, who wear and trade them with guests. Guests are also encouraged to trade with other guests. New pins are often released at special events, movie premiers and to celebrate the opening of new attractions. Every official trading pin has a Disney copyright on the back.
In 2004, Disney released a list of etiquette guidelines on trading Disney trading pins with their staff members. The guidelines include trading one pin at a time (backs attached for safety), refraining from touching other people’s pins and lanyards, and not offering money or gifts in exchange for pins. In addition, the pin must be metal and in good condition to be considered trade-able. Cast members aren’t allowed to decline a trade based on rarity or their own preferences, but they can decline if your pin is too damaged. You can trade twice with each cast member each day. If the cast member trades away your pin, you’re free to trade with her once more. These rules vary from park to park, so ask around before you begin trading.
Can’t get enough pin trading done at a resort? Avid disney pin traders should keep an eye out for special events. These events, usually held by a different resort each year, offer exclusive pins and the chance to trade with literally thousands of other people. It’s a rare opportunity to finally gain those elusive limited editions pins you’ve been seeking!
With hundreds of pins to collect and new ones being added every year, Disney pins aren’t going the way of the dodo anytime soon.
