Jul12

Hippie Culture started in the mid-1960s that arose in the United State as a youth movement. A distinction was made for Hippies, people who engage into the culture, and that is their style of clothing. Hippie clothes defines freedom or of being a non conformist to current segments of the society. There are many ways to look like a hippie.

TOPS: Females looks best with customized halter, blouse, apron-cut or granny dresses. Tie-dying could also be done for simple t-shirts. Make it sure that all are colorful and vivacious. Wearing a bra is not recommended since it is seen as restricting garment which contradicts the true essence of hippie clothes. Men could wear leather vest on top of a soft shirt or a baja hoodie. The vest is the distinction top for hippies.

BOTTOM: For females, mini or micro skirts that are colorful, vibrant, flared and funky are top trends for those having skinny and long legs. Conservative types may wear long and flowing skirts. Colors should be that of loud, mixed, wild and extreme combinations for that flamboyant yet natural look. Jeans could also be worn if not in the mood for skirts. Make it a point when in choosing jeans, the garment should hug your hips to give emphasis and are flared at the bottom. You can also customize the jeans and skirts by cutting its edge to have that smooth movement. You could also cut and mix old clothes for a specific look that you want and tie-dye them with earthly shades of blue, yellow or red.

For males, jeans may work well but should be bell bottomed: the grungier the better. If not flared enough, try stitching the side with a new cotton cloth. Side seam inserts may work well by adding vibrant or celestial looking patterns. Best if skirts and pants are made in corduroys or natural cotton fabrics to have that summer fresh feeling.

ACCESSORIES: The use of bandanna, wide leather belt, head band with flowers or a forehead band made from organic materials (i.e. hemp), messenger bags in shades of earthly tones, ankle belts, sandals for summer look and boots for winter are some things that could be worn to complete the hippie look. Sometimes, walking bare foot is preferred and could be done. Peace sign should be worn or attached as a design to the shirt or pants. This symbolizes their love for peace and freedom. Though hair is not an accessory, it’s still part of the look. It should be flowy and carelessly taken care of to have a natural look.

For those who want to look like one, always go for natural beauty and be creative. Feel free to express who you are and what you feel. After all, Hippie clothes were created for untamed self expression.
