Is Coconut Oil A Healthy Cooking Oil? 0
Coconut oil is one of those cooking oils which aren’t used by many people. Despite this however it has long been noted that you can lose weight with coconut oil easier than with other heart healthy oils. If this is the case then why is it that this is a question still worth asking and answering? The reason is that it’s just not that simple. Coconut oil is a saturated fat based oil and though it has been shown to help with fat oxidation and weight loss it also does not have the significant heart healthy benefits that olive oil has.
In fact coconut oil does not only not appear to help the cardiovascular system but it appears that it may worsen it. Some studies have shown that coconut oil actually decreases the flexibility of arteries causing a worse situation and exacerbating the affects of atherosclerosis. If you are really looking for a different cooking oil to use because you are looking for help with weight loss then maybe you should consider grape seed oil instead as it does not show the same potential for health damage but still helps in curbing appetites which obviously help with weight control.
Both of these two oils however emphasize benefits which are short-term in nature. Grape seed may be more of a moderate–term time frame but surely olive oil is a long-term beneficial cooking oil. It doesn’t have that same short term positive affects of coconut oil or grape seed oil in that it doesn’t obviously help with weight loss or any other immediate positive affects but it does appear to help in the long run by improving your heart health.
One additional point to make about coconut oil is that it is a solid at room temperature which makes it a little more challenging to work with over a liquid. It also is typically refined during the production process which means almost all of the natural flavor of coconut is removed from the oil during the manufacturing process. This may be a good thing or a bad thing. If you want extra flavor then coconut oil is definitely not worth using however it may be perfect for specific needs when you don’t want any extra flavor added to your food.
In the end however, it seems to be fairly clear that coconut oil is not really a healthy oil for everyday cooking but it does have some obvious and well documented positive affects that can be taken advantage of in certain situations. It may be worth stocking your pantry with coconut oil and learning to use it on occasion but stick to the heart healthy oils like olive oil for your every day cooking needs.
