Decorating in the Primitive Style 0

May10

Have you ever thought of decorating your home in the primitive style? This is a classic type of interior decorating that dates back to early American history. Many of the pieces that will be used in your home will have a great amount of character and a story to tell. One thing is for certain when decorating in this style, your home will not be easily forgotten.

The primitive style of decorating can trace its roots back primarily to the early settlers of the New World. Many of the types of furniture in this decor are made from simple woods with basic form and function. Pieces that were made with great and ornate details in Europe could not be brought easily to the New World. This led to settlers creating their furnishings with locally sourced materials and with whatever tooling they had.

Many of these first pieces were made from pine and american chestnut instead of oaks or exotic woods. They were then covered with a milk paint or a naturally made stain. These furnishings were handed down for generations and loving care was taken of them because of the great costs that were involved in getting any replacements.

That just describes the furniture though, primitive arts and crafts will be needed for your home as well. These can be any number of things from hand made quilts to stitched fabric “paintings”. The attention to detail in all of these things is magnificent and truly anything but what the primitive name implies.

The lighting of this time may intrigue you as well, it can be any number of things from hand made candles to the finest in oil lamps. Some of the reproduction antique pieces of today will even use the classic look of a oil based lamp and create a similar piece that runs on electric. There are also many chandeliers and such pieces available for your home. Why not take a look for yourself at a local dealer today?
