Getting Help for Addiction 0

Dec5

Overcoming drug or alcohol is no trivial matter, as any recovering addict or alcoholic can attest to.  There are several processes that the addict has to go through in order to completely break free from their addiction and start living a new life in recovery.  If it were as simple as putting the drugs down, then addiction would not be the monumental problem that it so often is.  But the fact is that addiction is complicated, and therefore the solution is necessarily complex as well.

The first form of help for addiction almost always starts with a personal decision.  This is really more like a moment of complete surrender, where the addict admits defeat in trying to control their drug use and decides to make a serious change.  Instead of boldly claiming a new direction for their life, the addict is beat down by their own demons in a crushing manner to the point where they become willing to do anything to change.  This is the point of surrender, and no real change can occur if the addict has not reached it.

Next comes the action phase.  The addict or alcoholic has to take real, meaningful, and positive action in order to produce good results in their life.  The decision to get clean and sober means nothing if it is not followed up with immediate action.  What kinds of action qualify?  These would be things such as:

1) Going to rehab or treatment.

2) Seeking help from 12 step meetings or self help groups.

3) Going to a counselor or therapist and taking advice from them and acting on it.

And so on.  These are the kinds of actions that produce results in recovery.  Simply wishing that things were different or vowing to make changes does very little.  In order to really change your life in recovery and overcome addiction, the addict has to take some initiative, ask for help, and then follow through with consistent action.
