How Can Parents Prevent Drug Abuse Among Teens 0
Drug use is becoming more popular among teenagers; however that is not to say that it hasn’t been around for a long time, the age at which people start using drugs is decreasing. It is important that the parents and guardians of these teenagers know how they can prevent drug abuse among teens from happening, below are a few things they can do to help them
- Maintain good communication with your children, talk to them about the dangers of drugs, the harmful effects it can take on their lives in all aspects, physically and emotional, it is also important to let them know that they can talk to you whenever they are confused or forced by their peers to use drugs .
- Strict parental supervision, make an effort to know who your child socializes with ,where they hang out, what they do , set rules about what they can or cant do and be strict on them to follow these rules. Also giving teens a limited allowance will help prevent them from buying drugs, making sure that alcohol and medications kept at home such as painkillers that can be addictive are well accounted for and that the kids don’t have access to them.
- Family and culture and religion:
Teenagers need to feel like they are a part of something and that they belong somewhere, it is thus important to create a sense of family and love for the teens which lets them know that you love and support them. Religion has also played a very big role in reducing drug and substance abuse among teens by turning their lives around to god.
- Its has been found that most drug and alcohol abuse occurs between three and six pm when teens are heading home from school with their peers, thus parents can try to encourage their teens to join in extracurricular activities at school or out of school to keep them busy.
- If you suspect that your child is abusing drugs then you should take them to your family practitioner straightaway. The best case scenario is that this will frighten your child into never taking drugs again although depending on the level of addiction they may have to go through some sort of drug detox.
