How Frequently Should I Change My Car’s Engine Oil? 0

Apr30

Because oil is so important to your car it’s vital to look after it properly. There are two aspects to maintaining your car’s oil. The first is to check the oil level on a regular basis and keep a close eye on the oil pressure gauge on your dashboard for any signs of trouble. Low oil pressure can cause big problems for engine and by checking the oil level regularly you can avoid these issues.

The second aspect is changing the oil. How frequently the oil needs changing is a difficult one to answer. The best answer is to consult your car owner’s manual. If you do not have the manual search on the Internet. You may be up to find an electronic copy on the manufacturer’s website or search automotive forums for someone who is willing to look up the information for you in their copy of the manual. Any car maintenance should always follow the advice given by the car manufacturer. Failing that consult with your local dealer or a recommended mechanic that you trust. I would not trust uncorroborated sources of information from the Internet, it is far safer and sensible to get the information direct from the manufacturer, don’t just trust the first website in Google because it’s at the top of the listings. I know this is probably not what you want to hear but having looked into this subject extensively I have found many conflicting sources of information. For an example of some of the confusion out there search on Google for the term “3000 mile oil change myth” and just see what I mean.
If it is time to make an oil change don’t be tempted to compromise on the quality of the oil used. There’s no such thing as a cheap oil change, to do so is a false economy it will cost you much more in the long run if the life of your engine is compromised. You can find out more about the role of oil in your car’s engine at the oil pressure gauge guide blog.
