Learning To Draw 0

Apr25

Learning to draw is fun and educational. Anyone can learn to draw, no matter their age or what they do for a living.

Most likely someone has told you that in order to learn to draw, you just need to look with your eyes and draw what you see. This is easier said than done, and makes it too tempting to just copy what you see instead of really learning anything.

Copying other people’s drawings isn’t really a good way to learn to draw – it’s better to draw real scenes. Start out drawing simple scenes with simple objects, and only start with more complicated things like drawing cars, people and animals later on, as long as it’s not a drawing you’re working from (but it can be a photograph). When you are using a reference, make sure it is a high quality reference. If it’s a photo, make sure it’s high resolution, and if it’s a real scene, make sure the lighting is right so that you can see clearly.

The most important requirement for learning to draw is your own motivation, not some special pencils or whatever. You’ll probably fear failure. But the more you can motivate yourself the easier you’ll rush past obstacles and learn to draw well.

Also, try to draw things you like – if what you’re drawing isn’t something you’re interested in, you won’t do such a good job on it and won’t be as motivated to be patient enough to do it well.

The better you understand what you’re trying to draw, the better you’ll be able to depict it on paper. It’ll be a lot easier to draw something with the proper dimensions, perspective and proportions once you understand your subject. So, to some extent drawing is just a skill. It requires practice and understanding.

Great artists don’t necessarily become good art teachers – because while they know how to draw, they don’t really know how they did it or how to explain it to someone else.
