Protect Your Gutters 0

Apr12

Winter weather can be brutal to the exterior of your home.  As spring cleaning starts and people inspect the outside of their houses, one item that often shows some wear is the guttering.  The gutters are often one of the items that get overlooked during spring cleaning chores.  They do not draw attention until they have stopped working.  At that point, trouble is not far behind for the homeowner.

If gutters were clogged with leaves and debris in the fall and then never cleaned, there is a fair chance that they accumulated water over the winter that may have even frozen, forming ice dams.  The weight of this built up ice sometimes is enough to pull gutters loose.  If that is the case, getting things back in working order should be a priority for you.

Gutters that have been properly hung go a long way toward protecting the exterior of your home.  They guide the water running off of your roof safely away from where it could do damage.  If you have made it through the winter without any damage to your gutters, be thankful and then do what you can to maintain them.  If you are able to do the work yourself, clean the gutters out regularly.  If you are unable to complete this task yourself, pay a qualified professional to get on your roof and do the job for you.

You may also want to consider having gutters installed that are designed to remain leaf free.  A lower cost alternative you might also want to consider is having gutter guards installed to keep debris out before it ever has a chance to accumulate and cause damage.

Whatever route you choose to follow, remember that keeping the gutters clean is a very important home maintenance task.  Taking the a proactive approach to prevent trouble can save you a lot of money down the road.
