Standard Fireplace Tools 0
When you want to use a fireplace, make certain you have the proper fireplace tools before beginning. Most fireplaces will come with some sort of rack or raised grate on which you will place the materials to be burned. However, if the fireplace in question does not have a raised surface to place wood, you can build your fire on the concrete base. A fire may be more difficult to get started in this situation, so investing in a small rack and/or grate that allows air to flow around all sides of the materials to be burned may be worth the money.
Once you have decided whether you are using a raised surface or the base of the fireplace, set your tinder, kindling, logs, etc., on the rack, and using an extended lighter or long fireplace match, light the material. In order to maximize the heat and light from your flames, be sure you have a pair of large metal tongs to rearrange the currently burning materials and to use for adding more fuel. Also important in increasing the output from your fireplace, is a poker, which is used to break apart larger logs as they begin to smolder. Once the fire has died down and the remaining coals and ash have cooled, you will need a small broom and shovel to remove the debris. This way, the fireplace is ready the next time you wish to build a cozy fire. Using small, gentle strokes is best when clearing the remains, as it is quite easy to stir up ashes to the point of creating a messy cloud of dust.
Fireplace tools are usually sold in sets consisting of the four main components (tongs, poker, broom and shovel). You can often find tool sets that include a place to store firewood so that all the necessary materials are located together providing ease of use.
