Cost of Carpet Installation : Why so High? 0

Feb11

It can feel like quite a blow. You have spent your free time going round carpet stores for weeks, so much so that by now you can even tell at a glance the difference between Stainmaster, Berber and Shaw frieze carpet. You have swallowed the price of the carpet and ordered one and now you find that you have forgotten you have to pay for installation too! Surely it cannot be so much? But it can, and here is why.

1. Skilled Task

One contributor to the high carpet installation cost is that installing carpet is so specialized. Although most handymen can turn their hand to a bit of plumbing, wall papering and simple electrics, carpet installation seems to be a case apart. It needs both skilled experienced workmen and specialized tools not found in the average tool kit. It is not a task that you should leave to anyone inexperienced as your carpet can be ruined if you do.

2. Installation Requirements

You will find that installation requires a number of extras such as padding (for a jute or canvas backed carpet) and things like gripper strips around the room and threshold bars for doorways which all need to be included in the job. When you get a quote, check if there are extra charges for these so that you know what you are paying for. Sometimes you will already have ordered padding from the carpet store so you want to make sure you are not paying twice.

3. Extra Services

A basic carpet installation involves putting carpet into an empty room with a floor which is clean and ready. The quote you receive may include extra charges however if you have asked for things like furniture to be removed to another room and old carpet to be lifted and taken away. If such charges are not specified, check terms and conditions so see what is included. If this type of service is included it explains some of the high cost involved.
