These days, many people have heard about memory foam – at least, a lot more than had heard about memory foam a few years ago. The technology is rapidly gaining ground in the public consciousness, and more and more people are now aware that they have alternatives to standard mattresses.
Of course, many people still have questions. Cost is perhaps the largest of these – quite understandable, considering the fact that memory foam products are still quite expensive. Again, they are nowhere near as expensive as they were a few years ago – after realizing consumers were turned off by the excessive price, manufacturers have found many ways to keep costs down in the production process – but the fact is that consumers choose to benchmark memory foam products by comparing them to regular old-fashioned mattresses, which are always going to be cheaper.
The mattress pads guide mentions that this is a problem mostly faced by potential buyers – that is, those who have not tried a memory foam product yet. Consumer reports have shown that most (certainly not all, but most) buyers of memory foam products are satisfied with them, and in particular are very impressed by the ergonomics of the product, and the positive impact it has on their health (particularly regarding comfort and back pain), as this is one of memory foam’s most visible benefits.
So in general, the memory foam market is seeing a situation where most of the people that buy and use the products are extremely happy with them, but simultaneously, tentative buyers are generally scared off by the high price. This is an interesting situation, and the solution is probably to allow more people to use the product first. Of course, mattresses pose a special problem – you cannot, for example, rent them out, because it is not hygienic. Perhaps a better solution for manufacturers, then, would be to promote less expensive products – such as the memory foam pillow or mattress cover – so that customers can pay less to try before they buy.
