A Little About Proper Humidification 0

Feb2

There are many benefits of having a humidifier especially for those who live in cold parts of the country. Low humidity levels do not only impact cold regions but is typical because cold air has the capacity to hold a lot less moisture than warm air. Nonetheless, despite frequency of use there will be a point in time where a replacement humidifier filter is necessary and coupled with the occasional cleaning there is very little other maintenance required. While the unit is being used however, it is important that it is used correctly. That means having the right unit for the size of the room or, in the case of a furnace humidifier, the proper size for the house.

Using a unit that is meant for a larger space runs the risk of over humidification which can be just as serious a problem as extreme dryness. In wet places, and that includes your filters which is usually kept saturated with water, there is a risk of mold and bacteria growth among other things. This is also true of furnace humidifier filters since these units usually tap into the house’s water supply for water.

Dryness is especially harmful to wood products such as furniture, wood picture frames, cabinetry, floor boards and other things. But over humidification is just as bad with the potential for mildew to develop and mold to grow in the walls especially in poorly ventilated areas. Mold spores are known to be terrible for a person’s health especially young children and infants.

In areas of naturally high humidity, there is such a thing as a dehumidifier which is basically an air conditioner that reheats the air before allowing it to re-circulate the room. Simply by cooling the air, the dehumidifier forces moisture out of the air. Some humidifier units come as a combination appliance that can do both humidifications as well as dehumidification. However, a dedicated unit will usually do a much better job.
