Tanning and Sunscreen 0

Jul16

If you are looking to tan outdoors, at some point you are going to need sunscreen to help protect your skin from being overly exposed to UV rays. A tanning lotion that comes with an SPF in it works great when tanning outside. Depending on your skin tone, you are going to want either a high or low number SPF.

SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor” and the number you see on cans or bottles represent how well your skin will be protected when out in the sun. It measures the length of time you can be exposed to the sun compared to a person that is outdoors without any sunscreen on. For example, a person wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 20 is able to be out in the sun 20 times longer than a person who does not have any sunscreen on.

The best type of sunscreen is what is known as broadband sunscreen. This will protect the skin against both UVA and UVB rays. Other types of sunscreen might only protect UVA or only UVB rays so you want to be sure that you get a product that contains both of them for full protection. A good sunscreen will help reduce the risk of skin cancer, help to stop wrinkling and reduce the signs of premature aging you might otherwise get from being unprotected in the sun for too long.

If you are at the store and are perusing the options for protection when out in the sun, you may also see sunblock bottles or lotions. Sunblock tends to reflect and disperse light while still absorbing some UVA and UVB rays. Most people will use it on the areas most likely to be impacted by the sun, such as the nose and ears as well as the shoulders. Sunscreen on the other hand will absorb the ultraviolet rays that are given off by the sun.

When looking for a tanning lotion for the outside areas, be sure to read the bottles carefully. There are also indoor tanning lotions that are on the market but these are specifically for use indoors with tanning beds. A tanning lotion that has SPF in it will be able to provide you with a nice summer tan as well as to help protect the skin from the rays of the sun.
