The Benefit of Porcelain Crowns 0
Porcelain crowns are not only able to help fix major dental problems; they also can be used to cosmetically improve the appearance of teeth. If you are looking to narrow gaps between teeth, fix teeth that are sticking out, reduce crowding of teeth, or simply to lighten their color, you could benefit from having one or more teeth crowned. For those who may be insecure about their smile, crowns can make a big difference to improve the look of teeth, and technology has advanced to the point where it is virtually impossible to tell the difference between a tooth that has been crowned from a natural one.
Before a crown can be fitted, a thin layer of enamel is shaved off the tooth. Then the porcelain crowns that have been created using molds of the patient’s teeth are attached using dental bonding adhesive. It’s a fairly quick procedure, and once the crowns have bonded the patient is able to eat normally.
Until fairly recently, a metal-based bonding material was used to apply crowns. It was thought that such a strong compound would be able to withstand the all the pressures involved in the constant chewing of food. The main problem with a metal-based compound is that the gum line tends to recede as a person gets older, revealing an unsightly gray line around the top portion of the tooth where the metal shows through. Because it is hard to prevent the metal color of the adhesive from showing, it has traditionally been hard to make teeth that are crowned look natural. Today, however, dental technology has advanced to a level to where metal is not needed. Pure porcelain is now strong enough for use even on teeth such as molars that do most of the work of chewing.
Using pure porcelain allows the porcelain crowns to be nearly identical to the patient’s teeth in color, making it almost impossible to discern a tooth that has been crowned from a regular tooth. Dentists are able to perfectly match the exact color of individual teeth and place orders with labs that can create crowns that flawlessly match them in shape and color. There is little need to worry about not being pleased with the results; the track record of this procedure is well proven and the nearly all patients that have had teeth crowned are happy with their results.
If you have been considering dental work and are curious about how ceramic porcelain crowns can help improve your smile, you owe it to yourself to make an appointment with your dentist. Chances are you will be highly pleased.
