The Benefits of Green Juice 0
Green juice drinks are about as healthy as a drink gets. Blending yourself a green smoothie or juicing green vegetables every day will make a big impact on your overall health. Green juice recipes are jam packed with antioxidants that battle free radicals that cause premature aging and degenerative diseases like cancer, arthritis and heart disease.
Green cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, collard greens and green cabbage contain phytonutrients that greatly aid in detoxification. These phytonutrients are antioxidants called indoles and sulforaphane and they stimulate the liver to greatly increase its production of detoxifying enzymes. These enzymes are especially effective at removing harmful carcinogenic chemicals out of our blood and cells. This clearly explains why people who eat the most cruciferous vegetables are considerably less likely to develop cancer then those who eat the least. It is also interesting to note that even people who eat lots of vegetables but very few cruciferous vegetables are less protected from cancer then those in which cruciferous vegetables are a main stay.
Green vegetables are a great source of vitamin K. Just one cup of most green vegetables provides about nine times the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin K. Because vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin you will digest more of this vitamin if you add some healthy oils to it. Mixing in oils such as flax seed oil or olive oil to your green juice or salads will help increase vitamin K bioavailability.
Besides its commonly known function of helping blood to clot and aid in the healing of cuts and wounds new research is finding other benefits of vitamin K. It can help clear calcium in our arteries that has calcified together with cholesterol and fats to cause a plaque, therefore helping to reverse arteriosclerosis. Vitamin K also has anti-inflammatory effects and can help with arthritis pain management.
Vitamin C content is another healthy aspect to green vegetables and green juice. Most green vegetables are even higher in vitamin C than oranges. Broccoli, kale and spinach especially are exceptional sources of vitamin C. A green juice that contains just one cup of broccoli will provide twice the RDA of vitamin C! Vitamin C is one of the most important antioxidants for the proper functioning of the immune system. It helps us fight off viruses like colds, flu and ear infections. Vitamin C is also one of the best antioxidants at disarming free radicals that damage and inflame artery walls. Such damage can lead to arteriosclerosis and heart disease.
