The Rebirth of the Modest Dress 0

Jul12

Modesty seems to be a dying concept in these days of  bearing of the belly button,  short short short-shorts, itty bitty mini skirts, and the cow’s out of the barn cleavage.  What’s going on?  Nothing is left to the imagination, so you want to say:  Why bother at all?

Designers and department stores have picked up on this trend, serving up much of the same skin bearing outfits as above.  There are  women who would love to walk into a store and find something feminine and beautiful without coming out  looking like Lady GaGa.  I am one of those women.  So where are those modest dresses?

Modesty is personal and to some relative. First of all,  decide what modesty means to you and go from there.  Remember it’s not about making a judgment call, it’s about finding a modest dress that’s perfect for you.

I am petite, so of course I shop in the petite department.  Because I often find the clothes a little pricey, I head to the junior department where clothing is more affordable.  Unless you’re ready to spend a lot of time, this is not the place to shop for a modest dress.  Having said that, with a little time and  luck, there are some modest dress bargains.

My last trip to the junior department, I discovered an adorable little sweater dress.  Yes, it was “little” meaning short.  Many of us feel (grownup ladies)  a short dress is immodest.  And when I say “us” I am including myself.  A short dress on a young girl looks appropriate, but not on the 35’s and up crowd.  When I tried the dress on, it was figure flattering and short, but the price fell right into my budget.

I couldn’t resist, so I made my big $15 purchase.  But I couldn’t deny the length didn’t work so well.  My plan to turn this sweater dress into a modest dress was black tights and boots.  Did I look hot?  Oh yeah.  Did I look modest?  Definitely.  Now some may say hot and modest don’t go together, but I beg to disagree.  I’m a school teacher and modest clothing is a must in my line of work.  Every time I wear this outfit, I get tons of compliments.  It’s an adorable, modest dress that looks very stylish.

Short dresses can do double duty.  They can play the role they were meant to play or they can be a long top.  Pair your short dress with skinny jeans or those panty hose without feet.  Slip on some sandals and wait for the compliments to come.

Another suggestion for low-cut dresses is camisoles.  Camisoles can turn a cleavage showing dress into a modest dress.  These come in all colors and many styles.  For every camisole out there, there’s an immodest dress that can be turned into a modest dress.

One last suggestion is to find a sewing pattern and an expert seamstress.  You can design your own modest dress by finding a style perfect for you and fabric you love.  Now, no excuses, there’s a modest dress, a stylish dress, and a beautiful dress with your name on it.
