Tips for Bass Fishing in Late Summer 0

Jan30

August is the magic month for fishermen who have learned the pleasure of what we might call fly fishing for bass. This time of year produces calm, sultry nights when there is bountiful insect life abroad, and when even the smallmouth bass does much surface feeding.

Bass are quite likely to take refuge during the heat of the day in the deeper portions of streams, lakes, and ponds. But with dusk they emerge into the shallows to feed. So the angler’s chance for success is greater if he fishes this kind of water and gives thought to the following largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing tips.

Small surface lures made for use with the fly rod provide a maximum of sport, although the casting rod devotee scores also with small surface plugs. Large dry flies are worth trying, and so are the bigger patterns of wet flies.

Fish with a delicate hand. Avoid disturbing the water and careless wading. Even after dark, use a flashlight only when absolutely necessary. Work the lures as delicately as possible.

Bass feeding in the shallows are constantly on the alert against danger. They are sensitive to disturbances of all kinds. Also, they roam the feeding grounds quite widely, so the angler is able to take a good position, fish carefully, and trust to the bass to come within range.

Bass that are feeding in shallow water along shore lines and on reefs are difficult to catch for a variety of obvious reasons, but there is one fishing tip in particular that must be kept in mind.

Bass feed in such locations at a time when there are schools of minnows in the water. In hot weather particularly minnows are inclined to move into shallow water and near the surface. Bass cruise among them, often in water so shallow that their backs are exposed to the air, and feed upon them ravenously.

The tip-off for the fisherman is that he must seek to imitate the natural food the bass are taking. So the lure to use is a streamer fly or a tiny spinner, attached to a long and light leader and fished with all the delicacy of which the angler is capable.
